I am a 31-year-old mother of two, I have 2 children at Ellistown Primary School, and I am also an aunty to 8 all of which are under 7 years of age and are at primary school or will be starting in primary school in the next couple of years.
I currently work for the NHS in Bed Management, before that I was a Health Care Assistant. During my 13 years in the health sector I have learnt the value of being kind and direct, maintaining professionalism at all times. Through my roles I have to communicate effectively with staff on all levels in all areas within the NHS, attending meetings, being challenged and putting plans in place to ensure targets are met.
I love being able to attend classrooms of my children on open days or to see topics they have done. This open ethos is fantastic as it allows us as parents to ask questions and understand how our children are being taught. I, like all parents want the best education for our children. I believe that through being a part of the governing board, I can understand more about what challenges the school faces when making decisions around education.
I am proud to be able to offer my support to the school, its staff and pupils, along with the rest of the governing board, challenging and asking question about decisions when necessary. Overall making sure the school is not only achieving for each child but to make sure it’s striving to exceed for each child.

We have a vacancy for a parent governor to serve on the school’s governing body. We are very keen to encourage parents and carers of registered pupils to nominate themselves to become part of our governing body.
Parent governors are elected by other parents and are vital to our governing body. They share equally with other governors the duty of carrying out the governing body's wide range of responsibilities. Governors do not run the school day to day, as their role is at the strategic or policy-making level in the school. They ensure that the headteacher performs his or her responsibilities for the educational performance of the school and ensure the sound, proper and effective use of the school’s financial resources. You do not have to be an expert on education to be a school governor, and we value the experience and skills that all governors bring to the role. However, you will be expected to demonstrate skills and experience that will enhance governance at the school, a commitment to undertake training and a willingness to engage in the life of the school and its strategic development, over and above merely attending meetings.
The Governing Body would welcome applications from parents with the following skills/experience: a strong commitment to the role, the inquisitiveness to question and analyse, and the willingness to learn. Good inter-personal skills, are essential.
If you join our governing body, you will serve for a four-year term and you can continue to the end of the four years even if your child leaves the school. Being a governor does take up time. There are six governing board meetings each year and governors usually arrange for school visits twice in an academic year. You will need to set aside time to be able to be an effective governor: time to prepare for meetings, for visiting the school, to undertake training and updating.
If you would like to take the opportunity to put yourself forward as a candidate, please contact the school by speaking to Mrs Hollis – Governing Board Clerk in the school office and request an application pack which will contain further information along with a parent governor election form. Please complete and return the election form to Mrs Hollis by 22nd January 2025 at 12pm.
If there are more nominations than vacancies the election will be by secret ballot. If
that is necessary, voting papers will be sent to all parents together with details of the
ballot procedure.
To find out more about what being a governor at this school is like, you can contact one of our Governors upon request, who will be very willing to answer any questions.
