I am 45 years old, married for 12 years with one son, ten years old who attends the school. I joined the governing body with a friend as a parent governor. I was aware that when my son joined the school in 2010 that the OFSTED rating was good and wanted to see if I could support the school in any practical way possible in its efforts to improve.
I am a currently an account manager for Caterpillar UK LTD, in the Building and construction products division, this role is essentially about dealer relationship management and sales performance. Previous roles have covered a fairly broad range of commercial roles: Pricing manager for Europe, Africa & Middle East; Business Analyst; 6 Sigma Black Belt (Project Management); Parts pricing Manager; Product Manager.
These roles have given me a broad experience of people management, financial analysis, relationship development and planning and organisation.
However I realised quite quickly that the culture, environment and work practices in the education sector have very many different characteristics and indeed that I had much to learn. I engaged in advancing my knowledge through dialogue and training. I have been involved in the recruitment of several members of staff including the current Head Teacher and when the opportunity arose two years ago volunteered to step in as the Chair of Governors. I am delighted to be part of a strong, engaged and conscientious governing body who are determined to help the school do its utmost for the children of our community who attend the school. We must do our very best to equip the children with the knowledge and skills and behaviours that will give them the best possible start in life.
It is our responsibility to help the school to create a safe, nurturing environment for the children but that also challenges them appropriately to be the best that they can. We also own obligations to the staff to develop them and support them as they deliver the critical teaching of the children.
In myself I recognise certain strengths as well as some weaknesses that I must continue to try to work to overcome to help me to be the most supportive, focused and effective Chair possible. Someone who listens, develops, leads and supports the FGB and the school in delivering on our shared objectives.
