At the heart of our science curriculum is the desire to build a secure knowledge of the world around us. We do this by systematically building up the students’ schema of knowledge about the World. In doing so, we believe we will provide our students with a strong knowledge foundation which will equip them for their future science learning. As well as enabling them to pursue an area of science in which they are particularly interested and give them the tools to meaningfully make progress in this pursuit.
First and foremost, we have used the national curriculum to ensure we covered the core basics. We have carefully sequenced these topics such that they build well at spaced intervals to enable greater retention. As a result, in places the sequence does not follow the National Curriculum but has been designed to be age and stage appropriate. Where it enables a greater understanding of the topic, our science curriculum moves beyond the national curriculum.
The terms are roughly split into biology, chemistry and physics topics to begin to set our students with an understanding of those parts of science in preparation for secondary school.
Practical investigation skills are interwoven into the content and are often built into the climax of each topic to enable students to apply the knowledge they have just gained. This also means that the core structure of a science investigation is repeated and reinforced throughout the Key Stage. The year 6 content will both review content from previous years as well as providing a brief introduction to some of the themes present in secondary science. This enables this core content to be reinforced as well as easing the transition of year 6 pupils into science at secondary school.

We have a vacancy for a parent governor to serve on the school’s governing body. We are very keen to encourage parents and carers of registered pupils to nominate themselves to become part of our governing body.
Parent governors are elected by other parents and are vital to our governing body. They share equally with other governors the duty of carrying out the governing body's wide range of responsibilities. Governors do not run the school day to day, as their role is at the strategic or policy-making level in the school. They ensure that the headteacher performs his or her responsibilities for the educational performance of the school and ensure the sound, proper and effective use of the school’s financial resources. You do not have to be an expert on education to be a school governor, and we value the experience and skills that all governors bring to the role. However, you will be expected to demonstrate skills and experience that will enhance governance at the school, a commitment to undertake training and a willingness to engage in the life of the school and its strategic development, over and above merely attending meetings.
The Governing Body would welcome applications from parents with the following skills/experience: a strong commitment to the role, the inquisitiveness to question and analyse, and the willingness to learn. Good inter-personal skills, are essential.
If you join our governing body, you will serve for a four-year term and you can continue to the end of the four years even if your child leaves the school. Being a governor does take up time. There are six governing board meetings each year and governors usually arrange for school visits twice in an academic year. You will need to set aside time to be able to be an effective governor: time to prepare for meetings, for visiting the school, to undertake training and updating.
If you would like to take the opportunity to put yourself forward as a candidate, please contact the school by speaking to Mrs Hollis – Governing Board Clerk in the school office and request an application pack which will contain further information along with a parent governor election form. Please complete and return the election form to Mrs Hollis by 22nd January 2025 at 12pm.
If there are more nominations than vacancies the election will be by secret ballot. If
that is necessary, voting papers will be sent to all parents together with details of the
ballot procedure.
To find out more about what being a governor at this school is like, you can contact one of our Governors upon request, who will be very willing to answer any questions.
